The development of the phenomenon of single-parenthood is provoked and accompa-nied by a variety of trends and social practices. The authors point out the following factors of single-parent families differentiation: the genesis and structure of single-parent families, the number and age of children, income, type of housing, the level of education of lone parents, the level of social well-being of families. The use of the Russia Population Census — 2010 results, the Population Microcensus — 2015 and the Russian Longitudinal Monitoring Survey — HSE (RLMS-HSE 1994—2016) allow to systematize and interpret dynamics, analyze the main characteristics of single-parent families, a social portrait of a lone parent.
