The article is an analytical review of the gender situation in Africa, dedicated to two an-niversaries: the 60th anniversary of the Institute for African Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the 30th anniversary of the Gender Research Group formed within the framework of its Research Centers cooperation. Russia and Africa are bound by many decades of political, economic and cultural cooperation. In the current geopolitical conditions Africa is becoming an important vector of foreign policy and foreign economic cooperation for Russia. It is necessary to expand and to deepen knowledge of each other for the development of further ties. In many countries of the continent women are nowadays a significant social and political force. The authors analyze aspects of the gender situation such as the establishment of gender equality
in politics, obstacles to African women’s entering politics, the cost of discriminating women in their basic rights, in their access to education, to resources and economic opportunities, in par-ticipation in public life and expressing their interests through women's social and political or-ganizations. The maintenance of relations with women-compatriots living in African countries is as important as ever.
