The article is devoted to the analysis of the process of achieving gender equality on a planetary scale, which was substantially initiated by the Beijing Conference. The author
believes that the Beijing Conference is a landmark event in the history of the development of human civilization. The article proves that the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action was based on the scientific understanding of gender inequality as a socially constructed hierarchy. Since then, humanity has consistently followed the path of achieving gender equality, confirming this both by UN program documents and by changes in national policies. The latest UN analytical reports are presented, which analyze many positive changes in recent years. However, an alarming slowdown in the pace of achieving gender equality is also noted due to economic crises and political conflicts. The author puts forward and proves the idea that, in addition to this, such intellectual and macrosocial phenomena as ideological doctrines and cultural practices of neoliberalism, neoconservatism, and “new feminisms” have a negative impact on the practices of gender equality. The author associates the possibilities of achieving gender equality (albeit in a more distant future than previously planned) with more active integration of the results of gender studies into cultural practices and social programs at both the international and national levels.
