The article examines the personal motivation of the first female historians of the Russian Empire in the second half of the 19th — early 20th c. as a key factor in their professional self-determination. Based on self-documentary evidence belonging to female scientists, the motivational structure that changes in the process of their integration into professional historical science is studied. The author analyzes such components of the motivational structure as material motives, the search for public recognition of women’s contribution to science, and interest in working with sources and passion for the process of historical research. The motivational patterns of the first female scientists are reflected in egodocuments. Depending on the social status and life situation, material motivation was important for studying history (as the main form of literary or pedagogical earnings). The motives for public recognition of women’s work and scientific reputation depended on the values and priorities of the social group to which female scientists belonged.
