The stages of the struggle of Japanese women for their rights are illustrated in this article. On top of it, this article characterizes the social status of Japanese women in modern Japan. The research method is based on historical and gender approaches. Finally, the following conclusion is made: the development of feminist ideas in the twenty-first century faces significant difficulties because of the strong influence of traditional views on gender roles in Japanese society.
