Kalabikhina I. E. New approaches to measuring women’s representation in STEM-education and STEM-employment, p.5-16

New technological developments and demographic factors demand the revision of measurement indicators concerning women status in STEM-education and STEM-employment. In this article the author examines the current situation with regard to women in STEM-education and STEM-employment; explores new approaches to the measurement of women’s repre-sentation in the STEM in the context of the development of this area in the near future; formulates the main directions of the influence of demographic factors on women’s participation in STEM-education and STEM-employment in the next 20 years. The conclusions proposed by the author contribute to the gender STEM-policy in Russia.
In particular, the growth of life expectancy and aging population may serve as an additional argument in favor of gender STEM-policy.
The author proposes to add indicators of the output of participation in STEM-employment; the representation of women in the new rapidly developing technology segments, research directions, innovative technologies, and new forms of organization and technology promotion, in the international education-al, scientific, research projects. Specific indicators should be devoted to formal and informal institutions, the characteristics of the demographic and economic situation, both in the short and long term perspectives. The author’s personal in-novative proposal consists in the time measurement of direct and indirect output of social policies.
