Based on the author’s sociological study “The State of the Russian Family”, conducted in December 2023 — February 2024 in four regions of the South of Russia, the specifics of the intergenerational transmission of family values through their perception by students in this region are shown. In conceptual terms, a rationale is given for three theoretical approaches to the analysis and assessment of the intergenerational transmission of family value attitudes: crisis, modernization and polarization (ambivalent). In reality, these approaches are dynamic. The state of positive modernization in the field of intergenerational value transmission can acquire an unstable polarization character, and then transform into a crisis and destructive state. This largely depends on the moral, educational potential of the family, state goal-setting and the activity of civil society. The study showed that the polarization of students’ opinions on the problem of intergenerational transmission of family values was manifested in a combination of liberal and traditional ideological attitudes in the minds of respondents. The empirical expression of this was the certain semantic indicators analyzed in this article. The liberal ideological trajectory was expressed in the following indicators: the students’ attitude to having few children with a predominance of one child; their perception of abortions; the attitude to the practice of depriving parents of parental rights in dysfunctional families, etc. The following indicators testified to the traditional ideological attitude in the perception of students: the perception of family as a priority value in life; recognition of the importance of religion in the institutional strengthening of the family; observance of the family hierarchy in relations between children and parents, etc. The article formulates general conclusions and defines some measures aimed at strengthening the intergenerational transmission of family values.
