Abstract. A multigenerational household is an important functional social structure and a traditional value both for the population as a whole and in the context of the tasks and priorities of state family policy. In the context of transformation of society and family, the analysis of multigenerational households from the point of view of their capabilities and meanings, preservation as demographic, social and family structures becomes relevant. Based on population census data in the context of federal districts, urban and rural populations, as well as the results of the author’s study “The experience of living in a multigenerational household”, the article uses a semi-standardized interview method (the objects of the study are people who have experience living in a multigenerational household, N = 28). The authors examine the prevalence of extended and nuclear families, as well as multigenerational households, generalize the experience of living in multigenerational households, and define the meaning of multigenerational households in modern conditions. The article concludes that it is difficult to maintain multigenerational households as a standard type of household in modern Russian society, which is confirmed by statistical data and interview materials. The authors emphasize the variety of experiences of living in multigenerational households, which can be roughly defined as “early (childhood) experience”, “creating a family”, and “family unification”. The meanings, objectives, functions and reasons for creating large families are as varied as the perception and analysis of such experience. The importance of a multigenerational household, which is preserved despite the territorial separation of generations, is emphasized. The willingness to maintain connections between generations in new conditions is a significant value, the presence of which can be considered as a sign of family well-being.
